SAINT MARTINS CHURCH

Saint Martins Anglican Church

Saint Martins Anglican Church is located on State Highway 83 and is one of the most photographed churches in the Waitaki.

Built out of the limestone that has been quarried from the North Otago region, and for which North Otago is famous, namely Oamaru Stone, Saint Martins stands as a proud testament to the craftsmanship of the time and the spirit of it's age.

Take the time to view the slide show below it offers a glimpse into the beauty of Saint Martins, but to really appreciate this stunning building you must view it yourself.

History of Saint Martins

The Reverend  G Fynes-Clinton who succeeded Reverend Frere in 1896 took the first services at Duntroon at the Livery Stables, until recently, still standing by the Maerewhenua River.

He would leave Kurow on horseback, stopping at Duntroon enroute to the Maerewhenua and Livingston gold fields, returning to Kurow for evensong.

The late Mrs Robert Campbell of Otekaike Station left a generous bequest of Six Thousand pounds to the Parochial District of Waitaki for a church and vicarage to be built between Duntroon and Kurow.

It is believed she meant these buildings to be at Otekaike where the road into Otekaike Station left the Duntroon - Kurow Road.
