History of the Duntroon Garage
Built in 1871 as a livery stable for horses and a place to hire a ‘gig’ or ‘buggy’ the garage has evolved as
he district embraced the labour saving automobiles and farm machinery being produced and
available from the early 1900’s. A Mr Sam Clark ran a repair garage from the early 1920’s before a
Mr Harkness took over the running until 1945.
Two brothers Arthur and Gisford Lister began a partner-ship for several years before Gisford left for a garage in Oamaru “Lister Motors” now Delectables bakery. Arthur had started an apprenticeship at the garage before being called overseas to WW2 eventually retiring in 1981. Arthur once told me about a customer who drove his car over the hoist for a service and headed of to the ‘local’ leaving his most dearest in the car knitting 6 feet in the air, well before OHS!
From 1981 the garage saw 3 owners, the Bairds, the Van der Sluys’s and the McBrides until current owners Andrew and Sonya Pickles took over in 1991.
